Great combo set - audio CD PLUS DVD! Features Kiev Philharmonic &
Philharmonia Bulgarica recordings of Winstin's "Spirituals for Violin &
Orchestra" (with Danielle Economy), "Scherzo Burlesque", "Trumpet Concerto"
& more.
Robert Ian Winstin is a
unique voice in the
scattered world of
contemporary music. At
times a die-hard Avante
Gardist, and other times
a neo-Romantic.
He is known for his
conducting of
contemporary works of
living composers
through the "Masterworks
of the New Era" series
and does yoeman work
with young performers.
This double disc set - an
audio CD and a DVD
feature some of his
early-ish works, including
the wonderful "Spirituals
for Violin & Orchestra"
and his oxymoronic
"Cuckoo Waltz" - which
is in 2/4 time throughout
and quotes the
children;s tune "Have
You Seen the Muffin
Man?"
Performances by the
Philharmonia Bulgarica
and the Kiev
Philharmonic are
exceptional.
CD REVIEW
Winstin's magnum opus
"September 11, 2001 -
9:05am" is well worth the
price of this double disc
set.
From the haunting
opening string moments
to the entrance of the
solo trumpet - whose
voice is representative of
the image of a rider-less
horse - the piece moves
brilliantly from somber
pathos to triumph.
A wonderful find!
